Your Mission: 

Create a Puerto Rico Travel Brochure

As a travel writer for Global Explorers Magazine, you will research and design a professional travel brochure about Puerto Rico that informs and inspires potential visitors.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Research and organize information about Puerto Rico's geography, climate, culture, and attractions.

  • Write informative paragraphs using proper sentences structure and grammar.

  • ​Apply varios text structures ( descriptive, sequential, cause and effect).

  • Create a visually appealing brocure that effectively communicates information.

Your brochure must include:

​​​

  1. A sequential description of how travelers can get to San Juan, Puerto Rico, from the United States.

  2. A descriptive section about Puerto Rico's climate and recommendations for what visitors should pack.

  3. Information about the island's geography and at least three natural attractions.

  4. A showcase of Puerto Rico's art forms (choose from music, visual arts, dance, or theater).

  5. Descriptions of two cultural attractions (museums, theaters, historical sites).

  6. At least three relevant and high-quality images.

  7. Various sentence types (simple, compound, and complex) with proper comma usage.

  8. Proper citations for your information sources using MLA format.

Instructions:

Phase 1: Research  and Information Gathering

  1. Form a Research Team: You will work in groups of 2-3 students. Each team member will take responsibility for researching specific aspects of Puerto Rico.

  2. Assign Research Roles: Within your team, decide who will research:

    • Geography and Natural Attractions

    • Climate and Travel Recommendations

    • Arts and Cultural Attractions

  3. Gather Information: Use the provided resources to find information about your assigned topic. Take notes using the 3-2-1 Comprehension Strategy Chart:

    • 3 things you found out from your research

    • 2 interesting facts

    • 1 question you still have

  4. Complete the Word Detective Organizer: For each unfamiliar word you encounter, complete the Word Detective Organizer to build your vocabulary.

Phase 2: Analysis and organization

  1. Share Your Findings: Meet with your team to share the information you've gathered. Each team member will present their findings while others take notes.

  2. Identify Text Structures: For each section of your brochure, determine which text structure would be most effective:

    • Sequential structure for travel directions

    • Descriptive structure for climate, geography, and attractions

    • Compare and contrast structures for comparing different attractions

  3. Create an Outline: Use the Rainbow Writing Paragraph Organizer to plan the content for each section of your brochure. Identify the main idea and supporting details for each paragraph.

  4. Draft Your Content: Write the first draft of your brochure content, focusing on creating clear main ideas with supporting details. Use a variety of sentence types and proper comma usage.

Phase 3: Design and Creation

  1. Peer Review: Exchange your content drafts with another team. Use the Writers' Talk technique to provide feedback:

    • Compliments (I like how you...)

    • Questions (Can you tell me more about...)

    • Suggestions (Maybe you could...)

  2. Revise Your Content: Use the feedback from your peers to improve your content. Check for proper grammar, punctuation, and sentence variety.

  3. Select Images: Choose at least three high-quality images that complement your text. Make sure to note the source of each image for proper citation.

  4. Create Your Brochure: Use the brochure template to arrange your text and images in an appealing layout. Pay attention to design elements like headings, font choices, and visual balance.

  5. Final Edits: Proofread your brochure for any errors in grammar, spelling, or punctuation. Ensure all information is accurate and properly cited.

  6. Present Your Brochure: Share your completed brochure with the class, explaining your design choices and what you learned about Puerto Rico.
